Items of Interest:

1. SHUFSD Superintendent Search Community Forum: September 16, 2019, at Pierson H.S. at 6:30 PM. Hosted by the Sag Harbor School Board. This is your chance to tell School Leadership, the search firm hired by the BOE, what you want to see in a superintendent. Please also fill out a survey at: surveymonkey.com/r/shsupt.

2. In addition, the NCC is looking for a few members to attend the SHUFSD Key Communicators meeting at 8am on Monday the 16th for a presentation by "School Leadership" on the Superintendent search. Please contact us if you can make it to this important meeting. (RSVP is required.)

3. The Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) issued in July by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court prohibiting all mining activities at the Sand Land Mine has been suspended by an upstate judge. The motion will be reargued on September 19. The NCC is part of the lawsuit with the Group for the East End, the Suffolk County Health Department, the Citizens’ Campaign for the Environment and Assemblyman Fred Thiele, Jr., against the DEC’s decision to grant the Sand Land Mine a permit to excavate 40 feet deeper and closer to our aquifer for another 8 years. (The Health Department’s water tests determined that the operations at the Mine contaminated our aquifer with arsenic, radioactive nuclei, carcinogens, pesticides, excessive lead, iron, manganese, and other heavy metals. The aquifer is everyone’s water supply. Formerly the Mine processed construction and demolition debris along with vegetative wastes at the site in Noyac.)

4. Next Meeting: October 15. (This is one week later than our usual 2nd second Tuesday meeting to accommodate our Jewish friends who will observe Yom Kippur.)

5. Carolyn Kirrane, the NCC’s representative to Parks and Recreation, has gotten a commitment to address the roaming dogs at the beach problem. “Dogs are allowed on the beach from Oct. 1- March 30,” says Kristen Doulos, head of Parks and Recreation. Service animals are allowed. Signage, overgrown vegetation and maintenance of the Long Beach parking lot are also being addressed. Thank you, Carolyn, for working on these problems on our behalf.

6. Public Hearing on the proposed budget at the John Jermain Memorial Library Budget Vote and Election of Trustees. Sept. 16, at 5:15 PM. The Budget Vote and Election of Trustees will take place on Sept. 26, from 10 AM-8PM at the Library. For more details see the Upcoming Newsletter, pages 10-11.
